Always Listen to 900-Year-Old Jedi Masters

Yoda of Star Wars fame is/was/will be a badass.  And I'm not talking about the CGI Yoda from the newer movies, I'm talking about the original muppet Yoda who lived in a hut in the middle of a swamp and could lift an X-wing out of the mud with the Force.

His use of strange syntax aside, he taught me one of the most valuable lessons I've ever learned:

Do, or do not.  There is no try.

You are probably sitting down right now.  Try to stand up.  Did you try?  Of course you didn't try, you either got up or you didn't.

It's not about being a stern taskmaster with yourself, it's just about having integrity with what you say.  When you say or think that you'll try to do something, it's like you are apologizing in advance because you don't intend to do it.  You are saying in effect, "I might or might not get to this, and to let myself off the hook I'll say "I'll try", because then when it doesn't happen nobody can hold me accountable, because I did just say "I'll try" to do it."  It's as exhausting to write that as it is to subconsciously think it every time you say try.

Have you noticed that when your friends say they'll try to come to your party, they never do?

If you are going to do something, just say you'll do it and do it.  If you aren't going to, be OK with it and just tell the truth.
